Description1840 edition revised and extended by J O Westwood, small folio (28 x 38 cms), pages iv-xii, 1-83, alphabetic index 2, systematic list 2, hand-coloured frontispiece depicting a figure of a fashionably dressed gentleman holding a butterfly net and other collecting equipment in a woodland glade with another collector in the background, engraved hand-coloured title page with decorative floral border and figures of insects (fore-edge of page frayed not affecting engraved surface except for a short tare neatly repaired), without printed title page, engraved anatomical diagram with explanatory key of terms, 43 (of 44, lacks plate III) engraved plates many with coat of arms and dedication to patrons of the work, all the figures of the insects are hand-coloured and in some instances the foliage and background are partially coloured, rebound in a full tree-calf leather with raised bands, gilt lettering on spine labels, new marbled endpapers, edges untrimmed, substantial cloth-covered slip case.
