The first book to illustrate fully and describe the life stages of all the British species; Frohawk took the best part of thirty years to breed every butterfly from egg to the adult stage recording with many images under the microscope. 3. VARIETIES OF BRITISH BUTTERFLIES

F W FROHAWK, VARIETIES OF BRITISH BUTTERFLIES , (1938) 1948 reprint, 199 pages including 48 colour plates, (illustrations include specimens of aberrations, gynandromorphs, albinism and melanism), a good copy with very clean plates but some minor foxing on the endpapers, Frohawk’s final book. (The plates of the first edition printing were lost during the Second World War in 1941 and a reprint issued later. Very few copies of the first edition exist. It is easily identified - on the frontispiece opposite the title-page under the figures of the Purple Emperor the caption word "Ex" appears at the end of the first line, but in the reprint the word is at the beginning of the second line. The plates are printed on better quality, less fibrous, paper and the weave of the cloth binding is coarser). Ward Lock & Co.
